Vans continues to enable and empower expressive creators beyond boundaries and limitations. As part of the House of Vans Asia Tour, the brand has partnered with Kide Baharudin from Kuala Pilah, a rual village in Malaysia. Vans and Kide come together on a journey across many miles to bring the local artists work from his sketchbook to life.
Kide’s art explores the relationship between the human character, the local culture and history
Vans and Kide first joined forces in 2017 when he entered the Vans Asia Custom Culture competition and became the winner in Malaysia. “Kide was one of the finalists from our Asia Custom Culture Competition in 2017. His loose and colourful illustration style is rich, vibrant, energetic and is synonymous with our Off The Wall spirit,” said Justice Lee, Creative Director of Vans APAC.
Kide partnered with his mentor Fritilldea to create his D.I.Y Authentic in the 2017 Vans Asia Custom Culture competition
Kide’s artwork, which expresses his observation and perception towards the House of Vans cities, can be seen throughout the social media platforms and sizeable posters on streets. “ I start with research and random sketches, taking ideas from books, internet and my travels, the creative concept of each region is always driven by the story. I tried to come up with images that compliment the characters’ emotion and activities, also added some humorous elements that related with a local culture and heritage.” Said Kide.
House of Vans is where “Off The Wall” lives and a place to celebrate art, music, action sports and street culture. Vans is dedicated to uplifting and empowering local artists and illustrators like Kide by providing a platform for self-expression and opportunity for global exposure.
